Mitch's letters from the past week

10/9/14

Holy cow. Is conference the best thing known on the earth or what? I love the idea of the members of the seventy speaking in their native tongue. The two in Spanish were some of my favorites. But holy cow, did some of the speakers lay down the hammer or what!? Like this JÖRG KLEBINGAT, who the heck knows how to say his name, but that was one of the best talks ever! Also Elder Lynn G. Robbins. Talking about which way do you face and fearing God more than men. Watch out Elder Holland, you've got some serious competition on your heels!!! Ha-ha but all of the talks were SUPER good!!! I especially liked the talk of President Monson about the Bismarck it was super awesome. Are we heading in circles or are we progressing and "Heading towards the safe harbor of the Lord?" Oh, such good stuff!!! And to top it off, this week we got to go to the temple!! Oh, such good stuff, the temple. There is always such a special feeling there.
Anyways, this week was really good. I just want to share an experience that we had this week with a less active member. A couple months back he and his brother were drinking... a lot. Like 2 or 3 days straight. His brother got tired and went to the stairs to go up and sleep. He collapsed before he got up the stairs. He died from alcohol poisoning. This less active member has felt a huge weight of guilt and pain over his brother's death. Others, including his own father, blamed him for the death and he started believing them. We had a lesson with him about forgiveness and the love of our Father in Heaven. I testified, and felt the Holy Ghost confirming my words, that Father in Heaven knows it wasn't his fault and that there is always a way to forgiveness. It was a super spiritual experience. He was crying and I knew that he was receiving his own confirmation of that. Then I felt as if someone pushed me up out of my chair to give him a hug. I felt such compassion for this man. I got to see him through the eyes of the Savior for just a brief moment and to see how the Savior loves him so. Yeah, sometimes we do things we shouldn't, and there are consequences that we can't control. But we can always receive forgiveness for the things that we do in this life. We aren't perfect, but the love and Atonement of the Savior are. If we put our trust in Him, we will receive all the love he has for us. Keep on keepin' on with a head held high!! Smile, because you are alive!!! Thank our Heavenly Father for loving us enough to test us and give us trials, for the purpose of growing in faith, love, and developing Christ like attributes!! I know that there is unknown power in prayer and that that is the key to aligning our will with that of the Father. Have a great week!!!

So not much has happened in the past 3 days. Same old same old. But some cool things did happen. For instance, we found 2 new golden investigators. So I guess A LOT has happened in the past 3 days!!!! Ha-ha
So the first one. Her name is Wendy. She was a contact from the other Elders in our ward. She told us that her parents are super Christian and don´t want anything to do with us, but she is really ready to learn and is really interested in the fact that families can be together for eternity. Then she told us that a really good friend that she hasn't seen in a really long time was Mormon. We asked her what the friend’s name was. You know, because we know about 1/1000 of all the members in Monterrey so we are bound to know her random friend, right? Right! She tells us the name. The maiden name rings a bell in my head. Her friend, from how many years ago, just happened to have moved into our ward and just happens to be the stake president's wife! It was just like sitting there with my mouth wide open. So that is pretty great.
Then there is Polo. We contacted him when he was walking with his grand-daughter. We talked to him and asked if he would like us to pass by his house one day to talk with him. He responded that he would like that very much. Then I responded that I, also, would like that very much. And then we took is address down. Then he asked me the strangest thing. "Do you by chance have any cookies or crackers that I could give to my grand-daughter?" And, not by chance, I did have some Ritz crackers to give him. Then we said hasta luego and then luego we went to his house to have a lesson. He wasn't home, but his wife was very kind and told us to come back the next day. We did so and he told us that he had stayed home to wait for us. He offered us corn on the cob and water and we had a nice discussion about baptism and then we invited him to follow the example of Jesus Christ and be baptized by someone holding the priesthood authority of God. He accepted. It went pretty well. The only thing is that his "wife" isn't really his wife. They are living in a... Free union? I don't know what it is called in English. Where they aren't married but they live together and act like it. He was a great guy. So we just have to promise the blessings that the Lord has in store for him and testify that mawiage is what bwings us togever today... I mean, that marriage is ordained of God and it is part of his plan for all of us. True happiness is found within the bonds of an eternal marriage. I feel like we will be able to help him understand that and then I know that the spirit will testify of it to his heart.  Just keep swimming! :)
